Posta tutto quanto il messaggio di errore esteso...
C'e` un file di log a riguardo.

E quale versione esatta stai usando di Xfree?

Come hai creato il file di configurazione? A mano?

Hai provato xf86config (non ricordo la disposizione delle maiuscole)?

Esatte specifiche del tuo hardware. E su google hai cercato?

Dove lo trovo il log? che significa? XF86config l'ho provato e con quello riuscivo ad aprire X solo che vedevo un quarto del desktop...la parte in alto a sinistra e non vedevo il resto...la risoluzione in poche parole era molto bassa. In internet non c'è nulla di questo barattolo...ho cercato parecchio.
Il file di configurazione l'ho modificato con vi /etc/X11/XF86Config e ho inserito i parametri che ci sono nel file del sito che ti ho dato.

P.S come faccio a vedere la versione di XFree che sto usando?

Dopo di che la cosa e` particolarmente problematica, poiche` non abbiamo modo di capire se ci siamo capiti o meno.

P.S come faccio a vedere la versione di XFree che sto usando?

beh... un modo semplice e` vedere la versione del pacchetto installato.
oppure provi con --version... o ancora cerchi in rete che versione veniva con Slackware 8,0

effettivamente tutto il log era inutile, ma non si puo` mai sapere.
Il punto e` che lui insiste dicendo che non trova la sezione display... ma tu hai fatto la modifica come ti ho detto... posta la parte finale del tuo file di configurazione...

e scandaglia google per problemi simili al tuo...

A pensarci bene... credo che tu chieda troppo alla tua scheda video.
Allora... hai un mega di memoria video.

640 X 480 X 8 hai bisogno di 2457600 BITS (2.4576 Megs) di memoria video.
figuriamoci il 1024,

Per 320 X 200 X 8 hai bisogno di 512000 (0.512 Megs) e questo e` il motivo per cui il oonfiguratore automatico te lo faceva vedere piccolo piccolo. Ma te lo faceva vedere.

Io proverei a settare di default come profondita` 4 invece di 8. E vedere che succede. Eventualmente togliere i vari 1024 e simili...

e il tuo monitor a quanto andava di risoluzione, intendo. E come profondita` di colore?

che vuol dire? quando sono dentro premo clt-alt e poi?

Significa che in linux puoi cambiare risoluzione premendo "Ctrl"+"Alt"+"-" per diminuirla e "Ctrl"+"Alt"+"+" per aumentarla (i tasti da premere sono quelli tra le virgolette "").
