3. The upcoming Efika 2 design will have on board graphics from XGI (Genesi has been granted access to the in-house driver source code, so we're talking *official* 2D & 3D HW accelleration here), as well as an Altera FPGA!

Regarding the free Efika program that is about to begin soon - the latest round of approvals for projects was the 19th of March 2006 (some projects are still being reviewed or require more detail). The next set of project approvals will occur in April, meaning it's not yet too late to apply if you have an idea of a project (participation in this Efika program makes it possible to participate in the upcoming free Quad-Core G5 OSW program). The boards are expected to be sent out mid-April 2006 (on or around April 15th), and the hardware (as well as shipping to your door and everything) will be free of charge for all approved project participants, as a support gesture to the interested developers from Freescale themselves.

1. The 5200B only supplies a PCI bus at 66 or 33MHz.

2. Off the shelf PCI at 66MHz are not available. Thus, the EFIKA uses the AGP slot in PCI mode. We mechanically bridge the AGP to PCI. 66MHz is the smallest common denominator (AGPx1).

3. The HAL/OF on the board can handle the x86 BIOS just fine. We manage this today with the PegasosPPC/ODW and all the ATI cards we have shipped therein. We have also ported the HAL/OF to PowerPC based platforms beyond our own.

The good news is that XGI has released the source code to Genesi and going ahead both 2D and 3D will be supported. For XGI, it is good for them as they won't need to support different firmware for different boards. They will just focus on the HAL/OF.

Fa pensare che ci sia sotto sotto molto più di un semplice accordo fra Genesi e XGI per produrre semplici driver.

Le notizie sono assai succulente e saporose.

Versione con chip FPGA di Altera, e con chip grafico Volari V3XT di XGI XV301, ma senza slot PCI.

Versione con chip FPGA, e slot PCI, ma senza chip grafico, con la possibilità di avere una scheda grafica XGI supportata ufficialmente da connettere via riser sullo slot PCI. Sono state già testate la XGI V3 (XP5) e la V3 (XP5) ASIC.

Versione simile alla Efika 1, senza entrambi FPGA e Chip grafico.

L'Efika 2 sarà in vendita poco dopo il prossimo 15 maggio.

Si prevedeono connettori DVI-I, LVDS on board per connettere gli schermi LCD a basso consumo per i portatili, e un connettore a 7pin SVIDEO, che potrà essere communtato via software fra Component, SVideo e Videocomposito.

Il chip FPGA di Altera verrà deciso all'ultimo momento in base al prezzo in rapporto alle prestazioni. L'Efika 2 avrà il connettore di alimentazione in formato ATX. Il consumo si attesta sui 2 Watt per la scheda senza chip grafico, mentre la scheda grafica da sola consuma intorno ai 10 Watt, se usata in modo 2D. I consumi sono leggermente superiori quando viene usato il 3D.

Tutto il raffreddamento, scheda madre e chip grafico è passivo.

ho anche scoperto con mio piacere che l'Efika 1 e 2 hanno già il sistema audio AC '97 che io credevo non ci fosse.

Questo significa che non c'è bisogno di usare lo slot PCI per mettere una scheda audio.
