IBook g3 e Ubuntu

Ho appena installato ubuntu 8.04 su un ibook ma ho un problema relativo al modo video che viene usato in quanto mi utilizza solo una parte del monitor sbordando l' immagine. Il punto e' che non ci sono driver ati installati e non so come fare per prenderli.. qualcuno conosce qualche stringa di comando da usare da shell per fargli pescare i driver ati del ibook ppc ? la scheda video e' una ati

"There are no official ATI nor Nvidia 3D drivers for PPC Linux. Neither company has developed any, nor released hardware specs to create a good open source driver. However, the current open source developed ati driver works well for most ATI chips, and has somewhat stable 3D support.

You do not need to download drivers from Nvidia or ATI website. (There aren't any there for PPC Linux.) Currently, PPC Linux uses drivers which are built into the Linux kernel. To make sure the correct driver is enabled, you must edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

And look for the Driver line in the Device section:

There is no DRM under PPC Linux for Nvidia chips, unfortunately.

The Nouveau project http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/ hopes to have 3D drivers for Nvidia very soon.

Beryl/Compiz should work under PPC Linux, assuming you have stable ATI drivers and good 3D going. Some ATI cards do not work well with 3D in PPC Linux, and others (particularly the recent iBooks/Powerbooks) seem to have very good results.

To test if your 3D is working (required for beryl or compiz), type:

glxinfo

in a terminal and look for "direct rendering: Yes" in the output, as well as a listing of glx extensions. You should be able to run glxgears to test that 3D is working:

Allora girando in rete, ho scoperto che in molti hanno avuto il mio stesso problema, che pero' e' facilmente risolvibile editando il file di configurazione di xorg.. il punto e' che io non ho per qualche strano motivo quel file di configurazione.. qualcosa deve essere andato storto durante l' installazione.. ora visto che ora ho il file di configurazione corretto che a quanto pare e' quello che serve per risolvere tutti i problemi, come faccio e soprattutto dove va messo e installato ?

Si io ho installato la 8.04 ( herdy ). Il file xorg.conf l' ho editato a mano copiandolo da un file conf di riferimento che ho trovato in un forum inglese di ubuntu.. La cosa che non capisco e' come trovare i vecchi driver ati per la ati rage che sono compresi nella distro 6.0. Se ci sono i driver per la distro piu' vecchia, da qualche parte devono essere no ?..

ma ubuntu 8.x non è più supportato ufficialmente in versione PowerPC, ma dalla comunità.
i driver per le schede ati sono già inclusi nel kernel della versione 6.x.

Perchè non ti installi ubuntu 6, modifichi il file xorg e via a sfrecciar con linux :)

Hai ragione, pero' non capisco una cosa, nei forum c'e' tanta gente che installa anche la 9.04 sui vecchi mac, e allora come fanno loro ?, poi ho anche trovato tutti i codec.. boh il fatto e' che non ci capisco niente.. cmq se non risolvo installero' la 6..

Se l'ultima ad essere supportata per i vecchi ppc era la 6.06, allora significa che ogni versione successiva va adattata...

Il kernel delle versioni successive alla 6.06, se come e' vero non viene piu' supportato il PPC (ma perche' non ti installi la Debian che supporta ancora il PPC???), non girera' bene.

Fossi in te farei come ha detto Seiya, installati la 6.06 e tieniti quella, anche perche' non mi sembra che hai molta dimestichezza con Linux e imbarcarti in strane avventure ti solo stresserebbe

Se vuoi roba piu' nuova installati Debian che supporta il ppc, forse avrai qualche azioncina da fare a mano rispetto ad Ubuntu, solitamente Debian non da' il supporto nativo ai driver proprietari.

Io vorrei capire una cosa che ancora non mi e' chiara.. se installo ad esempio la 6.06 e voglio installare vlc. Vado sul sito di vlc e scarico la versione ubuntu ? no, giusto ? perche' e' x86.. cioe' dove posso trovare la roba per ppc ?.. ad esempio qui sulla 8.04 ho installato vlc, con tutti i relativi pacchetti ppc e quando guardo un dvx ( si vedono benissimo ) non sento l' audio, c'e' uno scroscio continuo.. avete presente quando prendete un canale vuoto della tv ? ecco uguale.. la cosa strana e' che me lo fa anche con gli mp3 e gli mp3 posso sentirli tranquillamente usando il rithmbox..

Se installo debian invece ? cosa cambia ? a parte fare i passaggi a mano che non mi costa fatica perche' cmq con amiga ( gia' dai tempi del 1200 ) ho usato e uso tutt' ora parecchio la shell et simili e edito parecchio i file a mano..

Su Debian e' morto solo il 68k due anni fa (mi sembra), cio' implica che hai pieno supporto al tuo ppc ora e per gli anni futuri.

Mentre Ubuntu punta a conquistare mercato e quindi a girare sulle cose piu' comuni, x86 in primis, lasciandosi alle spalle le altre architetture, su Debian il ragionamento e' di supportare tutte le architetture possibili ed immaginabili.

Il 68k venne lasciato perche' non si trovava piu' chi avesse voglia di svilupparci, altrimenti nel 2009 vedresti ancora software fresco fresco di giornata per i vecchi e gloriosi 68k!

In soldoni, se migri su Debian avrai molti piu' utenti col tuo stesso sistema, avrai anche software gia' belli che pronti da installare al click di mouse tramite Synaptic (il front-end grafico di apt-get) o tramite apt-get o aptitude da shell.

Io mi installo solo i pacchetti .deb che trovo tramite i repository, cioe' non vado sui vari siti ad installarmi a mano o compilare i pacchetti, mai fatto , aggiungo i repostory e via!

bada bene!, molte di quelle cose sono vecchie e sono quindi info non piu' buone perche' le cose si sono evolute, per esempio ora compiz lo installi da Synaptic e parte...pero' potresti avere dei problemi in rari casi (come il mio baxxardo Asus Eeebox) e quindi darti una letta alle guide, anche se vecchie, ti potrebbe aiutare.

Secondo me non hai scelta, devi passare a Debian se vuoi utilizzare proficuamente ancora per anni il tuo IBook .

...poi...l'unico impiccio di Debian e' che i driver propietari non te li mettono di default tra i repository perche' sono NON free, mi pare pure ovvio...pero' davvero con quattro comandi ben documentati risolvi il tutto, io son riuscito a far funzionare un modem 56k bluetooth 4-5 anni fa, roba che pure sotto windows coi cd ed i driver s'impicciava di continuo!

Prova ad installare Debian, vedi se con i pacchetti piu' nuovi di quelli di Ubuntu hai ancora problemi

Se c'erano nella 6.0 erano compilati nel kernel, e potrebbero esserci ancora nel kernel della 8.04 che hai installato, altrimenti dovresti compilarlo da te.
Se ci sono, usando il file xorg.conf che hai copiaincollato in questo thread dovresti abilitarli: basta proprio che lo copi in un file che nomini xorg.conf e che lo metti nel path indicato dalla prima riga, quella col commento
#/etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)

L' ho fatto andre, ma anche se ho risolto i problemi di risoluzione video, la ati non viene vista, infatti mi rimane come schermo vga generico.. un vero peccato perche' a parte questo qui va tutto bene..

Se non vuole avere problemi deve temersi la 6.06, pero' se vuole pacchetti sempre nuovi deve installarsi la Debian visto che Ubunu ha abbandonato il ppc,non c'e' molto da scegliere.
