Getting Started With mySpellChecker - the Spell Checker for the Amiga
* Preface
mySpellChecker is a program to check text files for spelling mistakes. It employs
the ASpell library originating from the Linux domain for which there is already
a large number of dictionaries available on OS4Depot. The idea to mySpellChecker
arose from me always having to load the Cygnix environment first and then load
the text in AbiWord. At the time, clipboard exchange was not yet possible either.
In this situation a programmer will look for a simpler solution, and this is now
available for the public in the form of mySpellChecker. The program was developed
after short prestudies in September of 2007.
If multiple language catalogues are installed, text examination can be carried
out also for other languages. A dictionary has to be selected in the Suggestions
window. During the time it takes for the dictionary to load the alternative
mouse pointer symbol is displayed.
* Installation
mySpellChecker is a program for AmigaOS 4 and not executable under older
operating system versions. The program has to be started from Workbench. In
addition, the ASpell library, which is available alongside the program archive
on the home page, must be installed to be able to use mySpellChecker. The
ASpell directory itself must either reside within the mySpellChecker drawer or
be able to be found under the ASpell: assign.
Catalog files from OS4Depot must be copied to "ASpell:data/". The installer
contained within the archives cannot be used for this. Either use a directory
utility or copy using the shell:
copy CygnixPPC/lib/aspell-0.60/#? ASpell:data/
* Program Description
The texts to be inspected can be taken from the clipboard, inserted into the
text window by drag'n'dropping a text file from Workbench, or simply be picked
via the menu item or file gadget.
A plausibility check is then carried out to make sure that the file is actually
a text file. If the program thinks otherwise, a confirmation prompt is displayed
to make sure.
Revised/corrected texts can be saved via the menu. A security prompt is displayed
if an existing file is to be overwritten.
After loading the text you have to click the "Examine Text" button to analyze
the text. You can activate an automatic spell check in Preferences (not in the
demo version). In addition, the loaded text can be monitored for changes by
another program (not in the demo version). Faulty words are displayed with a
red background (that colour is configurable, as are the text and background
colours).
Clicking a faulty word carries it over into the correction/suggestion window
and several words are suggested for choosing the correct spelling. A suggested
correction can by adopted by double-clicking the word. If the word is spelled
correctly but is still objected to, it can be added to the user dictionary.
Depending on language the dictionaries may still contain a considerable number
of mistakes. Word combinations are also often missing, and only the spellings
of the two partial words may be included.
Greatest care has to be taken when adding entries though, since entry corrections
and removals are currently not supported by ASpell.
If words are to be disregarded only for the moment, these can be added to the
session word list.
Words spelled completely wrong and for which there are no suggested corrections
can be edited directly in the Suggestions window's entry field and the correction
carried over into the text via the "Use" button.
You can also enter words directly into this field for checking.
The text display can be scrolled by means of the mouse wheel, also horizontally
when holding down the Ctrl key. The scroll wheel setting from Input Prefs is
observed.
With the shift key held down the scrolling is line-by-line (or character-by-
character respectively). The list items, too, can be scrolled by means of the
mouse. The arrow keys together with shift effect page by page scrolling, and
together with the Alt key jumping to top/bottom.
* Bugs
Currently there a no known bugs, though there is still room for extensions and
improvement. The display in the text window is carried out without buffering
and thus flickers when scrolling the text. Tabulator characters in the text are
not represented as blanks - the corresponding setting does not have any effect
yet.
