-----------

Just follow these steps, but, please do it on a spare HD, as it may lead to damaging data or making you loose an entire partition (better staying on the safe side...).

Part 1) boot from AmigaOS

- download the backup of my Ubuntu 12.04 filesystem from:
http://www.locati.it/mario/sam460/ubunt ... 0ex.tar.gz

- copy the tar.gz file into a memory stick;

- install the parthenope boot loader into the destination HD bootblock using the media toolbox; you can find parthenope at:
http://www.acube-systems.biz/download/ub2lb-0.93.zip

- using media toolbox create a very small partition at the very beginning of your HD, let's say about 10mb, doesn't matter which file system. This partition will be kept empty and it will only be used only as a patch solution for a problem appearing whenever you do a Linux system update. Sometime when Ubuntu do an update, it will 'touch' the first boot partition by Ubuntu, screwing every data in it without telling you anything (I discovered this after loosing the content of my AmigaOS partition that was the first one of the HD...) ;

- create the partition that will contain your Ubuntu system, let's say at least 20gb, it doesn't matter now which file system;

- create the Ubuntu swap partition, at least 512mb, it doesn't matter which filesystem.

Part 2) boot from the ACube ubuntu livecd
(or you can attach the HD to a linux PC and continue the procedure from it)

- format as ext3 the partition for the Ubuntu system and assign a name to the partition;

- set the partition for the swap as a standard Linux swap partition;

- mount the ext3 partition that will contain the final Ubuntu filesystem;

- uncompress the tar.gz archive form the memory stick into the destination ext3 partition, enter from the terminal:
tar -xvpzf ubuntu12.04_sam460ex.tar.gz -C /media/your-partition-name --strip-components 2

- create the folders 'proc', 'lost+found', 'sys', 'mnt' and 'media' into the destination ext3 partition using the command 'sudo mkdir';

- enter the command 'blkid' to obtain information about your HDs and take a note of the ext3 partition id for Ubuntu;

- edit the file 'media/your-partition-name/etc/fstab' for changing the ID of the ext3 partition, using the partition id from your system;

- edit the file 'media/your-partition-name/menu.lst' to enter the name of your partition in the "root=/dev/" parameter;

- reboot selecting into u-boot to boot from the HD with the Ubuntu partition, good luck!

You can find further info on how to restore a Linux partition at the following page:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BackupYourSystem/TAR

Further notes:
- Ubuntu will only work from the RadeonHD, as X has problems on the SM501;
- do not update the kernel from Ubuntu when told to do so. There is no kernel for Sam460 from Canonical, those official kernels will simply be ignored and you will waste time installing them;
- the text terminal (Ctrl+alt+f1) does not work on the RadeonHD; it does only works on the internal SM501 via the on board VGA port;
- when you boot, a Parthenope boot menu lets you choose which kernel to use: try first the 'fb' one which most probably works, if it (slowly) works then try the 'drm' one, it will have a much faster graphics;
- the default Ubuntu gnome theme is quite slow: try the gnome 'classic' with no effects theme for a more responsive experience.

Before you tell me, yes I know: the installation procedure simply sucks, but my first concern is to build a rock solid kernel for the Sam460ex, which is still not the case (trying every kernel setting is very time consuming!). The remaining issues I'working on are lack of kms (better video acceleration) and the text console problems (useful for most installation procedures of Linux distributions). No internal audio support is planned as there is simply no audio driver for the SM501 on Linux and I will not develop a driver by myself for sure...

If you decide to try it out, please, let me know if it works and how it performs.

Grazie

Grazie Virgola, ci voglio provare :felice:

1) il kernel parte e il sistema funziona;

Dopo esserti autenticato scrivi "sudo Xorg -configure".

http://www.locati.it/mario/sam460/squeeze/kernel/uImage3424drm_log.txt

1) kernel log completo, non troncato;
2) il file "Xorg.0.log";

Codice: Seleziona tutto
default 0
delay 5

title Ubuntu 11.10 PPC
   kernel /ppc/sam4x0/uImage3418fb root=/dev/sda6 console=ttyS0,115200
   dtb /ppc/sam4x0/canyonlands.dtb

Saluti Gianni
